Anne Marie DeBruyne
Title: High School English Teacher
Email: annemarie.debruyne@ruralvirtual.org
Ph: 888-801-2666 ext 8858
Bio: For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher. The decision was cemented by a teacher I had at Cumberland High School. He taught me four levels of Spanish and several advanced English Classes. God rest in peace, Mr. Jack Peterson. He was wonderful, and he first focused on getting to know his students. He became my inspiration and muse throughout my career and continues to be to this day. I began my educational journey in 1995. I have taught various levels of English, History, and Psychology. I earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The bulk of my career has been at Superior Senior High School, with a few other schools peppered in whilst moving for my husband Paul’s job. These schools include the above mentioned, as well as Kiel High School, New Holstein High School, and Gilman High School.
Working for the RVA is one of the greatest achievements I have accomplished. Here, the tenets and values match my own. Afterall, teaching is just as much about knowing the students in front of you, as it is about the content being taught. Being a part of the RVA family fits my personality, my values, and my aspirations to a tee. It is the best school I have ever had the opportunity to be a part of-barnone.
In my personal life, I am also extremely blessed. We have three daughters:Hanna- age 30; Sara-age 27; and Summer-age 21. Hanna has graced us with a grandson-Gunnar David. He is five years old, and so very special to us. Last but not least, we have to doodles keeping us company in our empty nest. Gypsy is a Pomerianian Poodle mix (Pomapoo)- age seven, and Seamus is an Irish doodle- age six months.
In my free time, I enjoy reading, hanging out with the dogs, gardening, cooking, swimming, boating, camping, golfing, canoeing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Having two families: my RVA family and my own family, truly is the best of both worlds. It is wunderbar, and I cannot express my gratitude for being a part of such a wonderful school with such polite, hard working, kind, and well behaved students. I am beyond blessed. Thank you to the families, the students, and the RVA for improving my life in so many ways.

Ph: 888-801-2666 ext. 8847
Bio: Hello! I am very excited to be a part of the RVA team!
I grew up in Medford, WI and graduated from Medford Area Senior High. I went on to UW-Stevens Point and obtained my Bachelor’s Degree. After that I taught 7th and 8th grade Social Studies at Medford Area Middle School. During that time I earned my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. I served as a teacher in the Medford Area School District for 13 years and as an administrator for the last 10 years. I also coached High School Baseball and Basketball for the past 20 years. I am excited for the change, and looking forward to working with staff, students and families of the RVA!
My wife Brenda and I have three children. Their names are: Tanner, Rylee and Laney. Tanner is a recent graduate of Medford Area Senior High and is headed off to UWRF for school and to play college baseball. The girls are twins! They are 16 and are going into their Junior years at MASH. All three of our children are three-sport athletes. So needless to say, most of our time is spent at sporting events. Which is great family time for us! When I am not at a sporting event, you can find me on my UTV, at our cabin, or just relaxing at home!

Bio: Throughout my life I have often chosen to take the path less traveled and thus far it has led to successful outcomes and experiences in my life. After High school I went to the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg Canada and completed a B.A. in History and Philosophy. I then returned to Wisconsin and got a B.S. in Social Studies Education at the UW-River Falls. I have been teaching Social Studies at the RVA Since 2016 and I have enjoyed every year. The ability to explore the world and teach in a flexible manner has allowed me to grow as an educator and a person. When I am not working I like to spend my time collecting hobbies. I enjoy reading, gardening, historical fencing, woodworking, cooking, archery, whittling and playing video and board games. More pursuits get added to the list every year. I really like to dabble in a lot of things because education is a lifelong pursuit and I have a pretty straightforward philosophy when it comes to education. The more you do, the more you know.

Lori Noto
Title: High School English Teacher
Email: lori.noto@ruralvirtual.org
Ph: 888-801-2666 ext. 8540
Bio: Hi! My name is Lori Noto. I was fortunate enough to join the RVA “pride” in 2022 as a high school English teacher. This year, I teach English I, English II, and Yearbook. Moreover, I have been teaching, overall, since 2020. As I have discovered and honed my love for the written art form, I have learned to perceive literature and writing as the universal language of human connection, empathy, and personal power. Throughout my years of teaching, I have aimed to nurture students’ relationships with reading and writing. We all have stories universally deserving of being written, told, and heard; how lucky am I to witness students transforming into the scribes of their own stories! :)
Background: For college, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (Go Pack Go and all that jazz!) with a degree in English and a minor in Education. Furthermore, for high school, I was an online learner, myself! Given my background as an online high school student, I am a great advocate for online learning due to how it fosters academic independence in students, provides students with an alternative learning environment without in-classroom distractions, and allows students a sense of autonomy over their own learning schedule. For students to have the same positive relationship I had/have with online learning, I aim to invigorate my online classes with engaging activities, productive discussion, lots of laughs, an all-around positive atmosphere, memes, far too many corny and nerdy grammar jokes, and ample pictures of my dog.
Philosophy: As a teacher, I believe the best learning happens when students (whom I call “English scholars” in my class) know they are learning in an environment in which they are cared for. Consequently, it is of immense importance for me to build rapport with students; create activities that appeal to a student’s interests; and teach content in a way that makes students more worldly, thoughtful thinkers.
In my free-time: You can find me going on long-distance runs; attending concerts and music festivals, both local and far; adding to my vinyl record and book collection (if you ever have a book or music suggestion, PLEASE share with me!); writing poetry and flash fiction; nerding out over tabletop and console games; and failing at teaching my dog, Moose, new tricks.

Ph: 888-801-2666 ext. 8898
Bio: Mr. Phillips is a high school Social Studies teacher starting his fourteenth year of teaching, fifth at the Rural Virtual Academy.
Originally from Cross Plain, near Madison, Mr. Phillips graduated from Middleton High School in 2003. He joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard between while in high school and was deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom from November 2004 to October 2005 with the 1-128th Infantry Battalion of the 32nd Brigade. His time overseas gave him a taste for travel and experiencing other cultures, which motivated him to become a social studies teacher so he could share what he learned from his experiences and help future generations of Americans become good global citizens. To do this, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history at UW-Madison and a social studies teaching certificate from UW-Milwaukee.
Outside of school, Mr. Phillips is a bit of a geek. He is big into science fiction (especially Star Wars), comic books and graphic novels (check out my class), board games (especially Dungeons and Dragons…check out my class), and plays the occasional video game when he’s not helping his wife chase around their very active ten-year-old, Rory, and dogs, Kylo and Wren.

Quinn Robinson
Title: High School Science Teacher, Environmental Alliance Advisor
Email: quinn.robinson@ruralvirtual.org
Ph: 888-801-2666 ext. 8869
Bio: Hello, my name is Quinn Robinson and I joined the RVA in 2017 and am thrilled to be a part of the RVA team! I grew up in Sussex, WI on a small hobby farm. Since childhood, I have had a hunger for knowledge and a love for the outdoors. Whereas most people outgrow a child-like curiosity for the world around them, I still continuously ask questions starting with "why". I simply love the learning journey and the feeling of empowerment while acquiring knowledge. I am a quintessential example of a life-long learner. I attended the University of MN - Twin Cities and majored in natural resources and environmental studies and minored in forestry. This was a great program for me because my major allowed me to take classes in various disciplines from soil science, fisheries and wildlife, ecology, and hydrology to name a few. I graduated with distinction and eventually decided to return to school to become a teacher. I attended the University of WI River Falls to attain a Master of Science in Education. I have worked in education for the past twenty years primarily as a high school science teacher. This includes teaching in a traditional classroom and advising a project-based charter school. My educational philosophy is based on common sense. I try to generate student interest in science by demonstrating its relevance. This is done through student-based research projects, laboratory investigations, or discussions that demonstrate connections between content and the student’s lives. Using this guiding principle, I have found that student achievement and their desire to learn increase. Once this is achieved, the student takes ownership of their education and real learning begins. Personal hobbies include fishing and hunting. Trout fishing in the Driftless area is my favorite type of fishing, but I also enjoy fishing the many lakes of northern WI throughout the year. I have a seven-year-old German Shorthair Pointer that I train for upland game birds. Nothing compares to walking the woods in the Fall in pursuit of ruffed grouse! I am looking forward to learning with you and assisting in your educational journey!

Tosha Tessen
Title: Art Teacher
Email: tosha.tessen@ruralvirtual.org
Ph: 888-801-2666 ext. 8887
Bio:
I am the high school art teacher here at the RVA. I joined the RVA in 2019. Prior to this, I taught in both Stevens Point and Racine, WI. I have been teaching art since 2014, and time has gone FAST!
About Me:
I live in Oshkosh, WI with my husband, three dogs, and three cats. I also have 5 fish tanks of various sizes. I am a huge animal lover and advocate of animal adoption.
In my free time, I work on various projects. For the past year, I have been learning about jewelry making, tattooing, and drawing, which has taken up most of my time. I also love to watch documentaries about almost anything. I LOVE to learn.
If I am not listening to a documentary while working on art, I am rewatching one of my favorite television series such as New Girl, Parks and Recreation, The Office, Schitt’s Creek, or 3rd Rock from the Sun for the 411th time. Most would describe me as quirky, introverted, and above all, an advocate.
Education:
I received my BFA in Art Education and minor in Art History from UW Oshkosh in 2014. I then went on to receive a BA in Graphic Design in 2019 and a masters in Art Education in 2020.
Extracurriculars:
I am currently the membership coordinator for the Wisconsin Art Education Association (WAEA). I have also been the Junior High Board Representative, as well as the North East Vice President of the WAEA. Additionally, I try to make a habit of writing grants and have received over $20,000 in grant funds since 2014. I have received grants for things from building a playground, to having an artist in residence.
Philosophy:
One of my favorite quotes is “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure,". Failure is inevitable. It will happen to us all multiple times throughout our lives. It is what we do with failure that matters.

My passion for equity and inclusivity drives the way I approach Special Education and I love being able to support individuals with discovering the strengths and abilities they possess. When I am not teaching you can find me enjoying the outdoors in a variety of ways. My favorite things to do outside include mountain biking, hiking, fishing, and playing with my dogs. Photography is one of my many hobbies and I love sharing what I know with students who have that same interest. I look forward to a great year of learning with everyone!
